The position sits within the Pacific and Development Group (PDG) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade acts in the world to make New Zealanders safer and more prosperous. The Ministry advances the Government's international priorities through interpreting changes, providing advice to the Government on their implications, and then acting to promote and protect New Zealand's interests. By building connections and influence in other countries the Ministry secures the outcomes that matter to New Zealand.  PDG is responsible for the delivery of the New Zealand Aid Programme in the Pacific and globally.

The New Zealand Aid Programme delivers New Zealand's official support to developing countries. The purpose of New Zealand's aid is to develop shared prosperity and stability in the Pacific and beyond, drawing on the best of New Zealand's knowledge and skills. 

We are seeking an intermediate/senior level lawyer.  Your interest will be well received if you have a solid background in drafting and negotiating construction agreements and commercial contracts.   The ideal candidate will have a strong client focus, political astuteness and have the ability to establish trust with a wide range of clients, including an ability to maintain and leverage relationships with key internal and external contacts at all levels.
Reporting to the Senior Legal Adviser, you will be responsible for providing sound legal advice on a wide range of issues, including but not limited to:

  • Working closely with project teams to achieve rewarding development outcomes
  • Commercial agreements
  • Procurement
  • Providing training to internal clients on areas of interest.

You will be able to work autonomously, while at the same time having exemplary colleagues to work with and bounce ideas off.
