The Environmental Defence Society (EDS) is a leading not-for-profit environmental organisation committed to improving environmental outcomes in New Zealand. We are seeking an in-house environmental solicitor based in our Auckland office. The role offers great hands-on experience and the opportunity to work on ground-breaking environmental law cases and research projects targeting reform initiatives.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Case management of EDS’s public interest litigation programme
  • Undertaking legal and policy-related research
  • Appearances at council and court hearings
  • Briefing senior counsel
  • Presentations at community workshops and conferences
  • Generally supporting EDS’s work programme.

Candidates should be admitted to the High Court and have some litigation experience although recent graduates with high grades will also be considered. An additional qualification relevant to resource management would be an advantage. We are looking for someone with a very sharp intellect, effective presentation skills, high self-motivation and the ability to work effectively in a small team. Salary will be appropriate for an applicant with 1-2 year’s experience.

The contract will be initially for a 12 month period preferably commencing November 2018 with extensions subject to funding availability.
