An outstanding opportunity has arisen for an experienced legal professional with a proven track record in hands-on public law litigation to join Nga Tima Tiriti  - The Treaty Team. As a Crown Counsel, the successful candidate will provide high quality advice and representation to Ministers and government departments. Crown Counsel are involved in assisting with whole of government policy initiatives or policy initiatives within their area of subject matter expertise.

To be considered, you will have conducted public law litigation to a high standard in District Court and High Court proceedings, and ideally you will also have provided representation in tribunals and other alternative dispute forums. You will be confident and competent to manage your own files end to end but you can rely on the full support of Senior Crown Counsel as and when required. 

Experience and/or a desire to supervise and mentor juniors is essential, as are strong relationship management skills and a collaborative and forward focused disposition. A calm, balanced nature with a considered approach and the ability to make sound judgement calls will serve you very well in this role.

Your interest will be well received if the above sounds like you, and you possess:

  • a genuine interest in matters relating to Te Tirito o Waitangi – The Treaty of Waitangi
  • a minimum 6 years’ PQE
  • a proven track record in public law litigation
  • a background in government or private practice, or both
  • a desire to work with a collaborative, engaged and supportive team
